The Howard County Professional Fire Fighters Association was first chartered as the 2000th Local of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) in August 1970. After an initial but unsuccessful push for collective bargaining rights, the Local voluntarily forfeited its charter.
A decade later, renewed determination for workplace fairness and safety inspired a new generation of fire fighters to re-affiliate with the IAFF. In April 1980, our original charter number was restored, and by 1981, we won collective bargaining rights.
Today, we continue to build on the foundation laid by our founding members. Their vision and persistence secured the rights and protections we now enjoy, and their legacy guides our ongoing fight for safe, fair, and equitable working conditions for all fire fighters in Howard County. A stronger, safer future where every fire fighter has a fair voice on the job, the protections they deserve, and the ability to provide the highest level of service to the citizens of Howard County.
